It’s been years since Greg’s sung anything in front of an audience. Anything real.
The Yarders know he can sing. He used to be in a band, and anyone in a car with him learns quickly that he controls the radio, singing and drumming along on the steering wheel. Sometimes he’ll even sing softly to himself around the office if he’s got a song stuck in his head.
What they don’t know about is all the times he stayed up all night in Sherlock’s flat, nervously pacing and drinking cup after cup of coffee while he waited for Sherlock to come down from a high. The flat was horribly quiet so Greg would fill the hours by singing to himself, whatever came to mind.
That’s how he found out that Sherlock’s mother sang to them when they were boys. He doubts Sherlock even remembers telling him, shining with sweat and glassy-eyed as he’d been at the time.
But Sherlock had also said that he liked Greg’s voice, and he would wave his arm clumsily, conducting Greg before he slipped back into unconsciousness. It was probably just ego and imagination but Greg thought Sherlock slept better when he sang, so it became a conscious habit that died out along with Sherlock’s drug use.
At Sherlock’s funeral he feels like he’s run out of words to say, so he sings someone else’s words instead.

Sherlock 1-10: five relationships
Sherlock Holmes and DI Greg Lestrade
Aside from his relationship with John, Mycroft and Moriarty, (and Mrs. Hudson, too, to a certain extent), Sherlock’s most important one is with Lestrade, because this (which starts out, I presume, as a mutually beneficial arrangement and then a friendship, albeit in a looser sense) is what enables Sherlock to practice his genius. Without Lestrade, Sherlock wouldn’t gain access to the criminal cases that thrill and occupy his mind.
And I especially appreciate this in the BBC series, how Lestrade has been transformed from the man Watson describes as “a little sallow rat-faced, dark-eyed fellow” in ACD’s canon to the character we know today, which is a vast improvement on how Holmes sees him, “the best in a bad lot.”

steel-and-glass has submitted a couple of Sherlock/Lestrade roleplays that have been occurring on LJ, in case anyone is interested in reading them:
Submission notes: this is set about five years before “A Study In Pink” just after Sherlock and Lestrade first met. We never got around to finishing it, unfortunately, so it stays incomplete.
Submission notes: which picks up just after Irene Adler’s faked death in the middle of “A Scandal in Belgravia”. Mycroft asks Lestrade to keep an eye on Sherlock during the ‘danger’ night that follows. This one is still on-going, it’s supposed to encompass all season two, Sherlock’s death and the aftermath. We’re about mid-Reichenbach, right now.
